Wells, No. 92002 would spend its formative years undergoing testing, initially at the Railway Technical Centre, Derby, then at the Velim test track near Prague in the Czech Republic and, finally, at the Arsenal complex near Vienna in Austria. Repatriated to the UK in time for the Crewe Basford Hall Open Day in August 1995, it was eventually taken into stock in October 1996 at Crewe International Electric Maintenance Depot some two years after the opening of the Channel Tunnel. Initially subsisting on a diet of trains between Dollands Moor and North London over the ‘classic’ third rail route - once cleared by Railtrack - it joined English Welsh & Scottish Railway on its takeover of Railfreight Distribution in November 1997 and by the end of the decade the dual-voltage locomotive could be found with ‘pan’ up working the full length of the West Coast Main Line between Mossend and Wembley, while services on the East Coast route followed a couple of years later. No. 92002, by now defaced with an EWS ‘big beasties’ sticker, was stored in December 2008 and later re-instated after the sale to DB Schenker in November 2012. It spent several months hired to Direct Rail Services in 2014 and was sidelined again that same November. With its European signalling capability, DB exported the Class 92 to its subsidiary in Romania in April 2015 and renumbered it 91 53 0472 003-9 with the name Lucian Blaga after the philosopher and poet. For the next decade this group of locomotives was considered ‘common user’ with EWS’ own fleet until April 2006, when they were stored at Crewe IEMD with the expectation that SNCF would start running its own trains in the UK. This ambition ended in June 2008 with the news that the operator would hand its four operational Class 92s to Eurotunnel subsidiary Europorte 2, which included No. 92028, where they would join the seven European Passenger Services examples purchased the previous year. In June 2010, Europorte acquired GB Railfreight and a year later took on the outstanding five SNCF locomotives, bringing all 16 non-RfD machines under the GBRf banner. Initially retaining its Europorte brandings and working in both the UK and France in April 2015 it was moved to Brush Traction, Loughborough, after some disastrous outings leading the newly won Caledonian Sleeper workings. Only the second locomotive to gain the new GBRf Europorte livery it would spend two years on site undergoing reliability modifications before being released back into traffic in May 2017, by now with the red parts of its livery painted out following the sale of the operator to the Swedish owner of Hector Rail. It returned to Brush in March 2018 as the first non-sleeper liveried Class 92 to get the CAF/Dellner upgrade for working with the new Mk.5 formations, returning to traffic that August. It has been a solid performer ever since on the Anglo-Scottish sleeper on both the WCML and ECML ‘diverts’ as well as as the associated empty stock workings.

92029 DB Cargo (with Martin House headboard) EXCLUSIVE
Named for Dante Alighieri, the famed Italian writer of the Divine Comedy, which tells the fictional story of the author’s journey through hell, the palindromic No. 92029 Dante was released from Brush at Loughborough in March 1995 for testing but would not be officially allocated to Crewe IEMD until six months later. Like most of its EWS-owned colleagues it was rarely used to its full capabilities and its first decade of action was regularly interrupted by periods of store. In October 2008, by which time it had gained the large EWS sticker, it was sidelined for longer than usual and it didn’t return to an active pool until July 2013, several years after the DB Schenker takeover. In 2013-4 it was also seconded to Direct Rail Services for several stints on the operator’s key intermodal services, while April 2015 saw it stored for its second long time out. In 2016 it had a brush with export as DB lined it up for a transfer to Eastern Europe, although this was subsequently cancelled. Three years later, re-activation work commenced but due to other priorities at its home depot this was not completed until June 2023, and was was the first DB ‘92’ to receive similar interference isolation equipment as fitted to the GBRf examples to allow it to return to the WCML under its own power. Following the completion of several test runs it ran to Toton for a repaint, being released in standard DB Cargo ‘Traffic red’. Shortly after on August 27, and still in immaculate condition, it worked the Carlisle-Warrington leg of the Branch Line Society’s ‘Garsdale Growler’ railtour, the second day of a two-day event raising funds for the Martin House Children’s Hospice, complete with headboard. It eventually moved to Dollands Moor in the October to take up freight duties on the high speed route to London, although it is still regularly seen south of Crewe on light engine moves, and has even made the odd foray to Carlisle and back to iron out any ‘bugs’.

92030 Ashford RfD European
Although 30 Class 92s were initially allocated to Railfreight Distribution just three members of the class wore RfD logos with the large ‘billboard’ style lettering (Nos. 92009/022/030) with a single example gaining RfD and SNCF logos at each end of the body (No. 92020). Towards the end of 2006 it lost its RfD logos and lettering in favour of the ‘big beasties’ decal, while 2013/4 often saw it allocated for hire to Direct Rail Services for use on the ‘Tesco Express’. The following year it was exported to Bulgaria and was denamed, although the cast double arrows and Crewe depot plaques proved too difficult to remove. There were more cosmetic changes at its new home, it lost the big EWS logo and gained small DB ones as well as the 12-digit number 91 70 0092 030-1, later changed to 91 52 1688 030-1. Incredibly, the operator moved the 126-tonne Class 92 from Tyseley to the hotel’s car park by road for the dedication event, which finally saw the locomotive named, it being the only member of the class to miss out on gaining its original allocated identity, in this case Schiller. Like its forebear, No. 92031 also saw its Channel Tunnel roundels repositioned to line up with the base of the ‘gold’ stripe, but in a welcome change a standard cast nameplate was applied instead of transfers. It soon settled back into a varied selection of freight duties anywhere between Dollands Moor and Mossend, and was even a popular choice for railtour duties which took it to locations such as the then unfamiliar London Euston as well as the Great Eastern Main Line to Harwich Town. This locomotive was also involved in trials in February 2010 using Cargo-D’s blue/grey Wrexham & Shropshire-branded Mk.3 set as a proof of concept for the class to take over the Anglo-Scottish sleeper services, which would eventually take place under the aegis of GBRf in April 2015.

92020). These had previously been worn by ‘Crompton’ No. 33052 and were the first break from the original plan to name the fleet after notable European cultural figures. With the benefits of the Channel Tunnel proving difficult to unlock, like many of its classmates No. 92030 spent much of the EWS era working domestic freight duties punctuated by periods of store. While the former was given the new English Welsh & Scottish Railway identity ahead of the Toton Open Day in August 1998, the latter was given its makeover ahead of its soon-to-be namesake’s annual conference at the Metropole Hotel, near the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, in June 2001.
